Ketogenic Diet: Benefits and Consequences

The Ketogenic Diet consists of high-fat foods, foods that contain an adequate amount of protein, and a very low amount of carbohydrates. Normally, the human body gets its main source of energy from carbohydrates. However, the ketogenic diet deprives the body of glucose, initiating ketosis (and weight loss). During ketosis, the body is forced to break down stored fat instead of sugar to produce an alternative source of energy.

The Ketogenic Diet has been around for centuries and has been found to have many benefits.

Reduces Acne

Eating a diet high in processed and refined carbohydrates can alter gut bacteria and cause more dramatic blood sugar fluctuations, both of which can have an influence on your skin. Therefore, by decreasing carbohydrate intake, it’s not a surprise that a ketogenic diet could reduce some cases of acne.

May Protect Brain Functioning

Some studies suggest that the keto diet offers neuroprotective benefits. These may help treat or prevent conditions like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and even some sleep disorders. One study even found that children following a ketogenic diet had improved alertness and cognitive functioning.

Aids in Weight Loss

It takes more work to turn fat into energy than it takes to turn carbohydrates into energy. Because of this, a ketogenic diet can help speed up weight loss.

The Complications

There are many immediate side effects of the keto diet. Keep in mind that your brain and body’s primary and preferred source of energy comes from glucose.

Some Complications below:

  • Constipation
  • Sluggishness
  • Low Blood Sugar
  • Not Sustainable method of reaching optimal wellness

It’s always necessary to talk to your doctor or a nutritionist before starting a new diet, and the keto diet is no different
